(Halloween and in-Between)
  Pet-related events are preceded by a paw print. Halloween activities are in orange.

 We will be adding items to the calendar as we become aware of events, so check this space  throughout the month. There will be no Halloween dog costume competition this year in Marine Park, but there will be a pet-related event at the Nature Center on October 28 (see below).

October 7 (Sun.)

  Blessing of the Animals

Churches throughout the city -- of all denominations -- are holding blessing  ceremonies on Sunday. Locally, you can participate at
St. Edmund Church 

All well-behaved critters are invited, including stuffed animals (if your child does not have a pet), or you can bring a photo. Blessings take place rain or shine beginning at 1:30 pm in the Grotto next to the church (between East 19th St. and Ocean Ave.; enter via driveway on Ave. T).

The biggest of all blessing ceremonies (including lions and tigers and bears, oh my!, takes place, of course, takes place at St. John the Divine  -- the second largest basilica in the world -- on the Upper West Side. The blessings are part of an all-day event that begins at 11 am.

October 8 (Mon.)

  A Night of Jazz

A fundraising event for North Shore Animal League. Performance by Judy Carmichael and her quartet at Steinway Hall on West 57th Street in Manhattan.  Tickets: $100. RSVP.

October 14 (Sun.)

Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC)
21st Annual Dog Show and Parade, 12-5 pm

Parade begins at noon at the BARC shelter/BQE Pet Supply Store (see below) and goes to McCarren Park. Everyone is encouraged to be in costume.

The dog show runs from 1-5 in the park. The theme is Super Pup & His Friends. Prizes include Best Superhero costume ($500 for first place; $200, second). Also prizes for Best Kisser, Best Trick, etc. Food, music, and other entertainment. Pre-registration for parade is not required.

October 20 (Sat.)

23rd Annual Halloween Walk, 1-3:30 pm

A howling good time for kids and adults. Be prepared to be scared. Sponsored by the Marine Park Civic Association and Urban Park Rangers. There will be a puppet show at the ends of the trail. Alas, pooches are not invited to participate.

Halloween at the Aquarium

Haunted Pavilion, 3D Halloween ride, face painting, games, prizes, and arts and crafts. Costumes encouraged.

Nessie Comes to Brooklyn

The Loch Ness Monster will be visiting Gerritsen Creek (courtesy of artist Cameron Gainer) close to the Nature Center. It's part of the Art in the Parks program, which is celebrating 40 years of exhibitions throughout city parks.

The artist will speak about his work at the Nature Center in November (date to be posted when available).

October 21 (Sun.)

Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festival, 12-5 pm

Animals from New York City's shelters will be available for adoption. A steel drum band will provide music, and there will be low-cost microchipping ($25) for dogs and cats. Pet care professionals, including a vet, trainer, and groomer will be on hand to answer questions.

9th Annual Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest

As in previous years, the contest will feature dogs competing for prizes in front of three judges.

Registration begins at 11:30 am; judging starts promptly at 12.

Suggested donation: $5 per entrant.

The event is sponsored by the Fort Greene dog owners group Fort Greene PUPS.

Location: Downtown Brooklyn, Fort Greene Park (top of the hill, near the monument).

Halloween in Prospect Park

A cornucopia of Halloween events is slated for Prospect Park, including a haunted walk and carnival, a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, a haunted carousel, scary storytelling, and much more.

Halloween at Greenwood

Tour of the cemetery, including tales of murder, mayhem, spirits, and ghosts.
Cost: $20; $10 for Historic Fund members. Reservation not necessary.

October 28 (Sun.)

Hoyt Lost and Found Pet Bulletin Board Dedication, 1 pm

Celebrate the launch of the new outdoor bulletin board built by Nature Center volunteers to provide a central location for posted information regarding lost and found animals.

The Pet Adoption Mobile from Animal Care and Control will be at the Center and low-cost ($25) animal microchipping will be available. Information on pet care and licensing will be on hand as well.

Gilbert the Magician and his Wonder Dog, Red will perform and there will be clowns, pumpkin carving, and a dress-as-an- Urban-Park-Ranger costume contest.

The bulletin board was made possible by a donation in honor of Jack and Ellen Hoyt. The event is sponsored by the Urban Park Rangers.

Narrows Botanical Gardens 12th Annual Harvest Festival & Canine Costume Contest

Dogs must be registered no later than October 26 in order to be eligible to participate in the costume contest. Fee: $10. Prizes will be awarded. A link to an application can be found on the Narrows Botanical Gardens website (see below). The form must be presented to Paws 'N' Claws Grooming, 57 Bay Ridge Ave, the competition's sponsor.

Forty vendors -- including artists, craftspeople, and sellers from the local greenmarket -- will be participating, and there will be food, music, square dancing, pumpkin painting, and a plant sale.

K-9 Kostume Karnival

Prizes for best large and small dog costume; low-cost microchipping will be available from the Mayor's Alliance. Dog trainer Dawn Prentiss from Semper Fido will answer questions.

Sponsored by ARF-ARF (Allied Rockaway Foundation for Animal Recreation and Fitness) in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.

Ghouls and Gourds

Activities and entertainment all afternoon, including a variety of unusual musical presentations and workshops. Giant puppets, ghost-making, tattoo parlor, costume parade. Children's book authors and illustrators will read from their works.

Haunted NYC: Gravesend Cemetery

Tour one of the oldest (seventeenth century)) cemeteries in NYC with an Urban Park Ranger and hear spooky tales. Bring a flashlight.

HALLOWEEN EXTRAVAGANZA
AT 61st PRECINCT


Magic show, pumpkin painting, treats, and more. Sponsored by the 61st Precinct Community Council, 61st Precinct Auxiliaries, and precinct police officers.

Location: Coney Island Ave. at Ave. W.


October 31 (Wed.), 6:30 pm

18th Annual Park Slope Halloween
Parade


Participants can join at any point along the route. Dogs are welcome.

The family-oriented parade includes the Headless Horseman (on a real horse) and many other creatures scary and cute.

Marching music will be provided by Paprika as well as The Eternal Buzz Brass Band and other entertainers.

If you plan to attend with your pooch, FIDO (Prospect Park's dog owners' group) reminds paradegoers that dogs should be well-behaved around children, crowds, and noise.

Location: Park Slope; from Seventh Ave. and 12th St. north to Union St.
