We will be adding items to the calendar as we become aware of events, so
check this space throughout the month. There will be
no
Halloween dog costume competition this year in
Marine Park, but there will be a pet-related event
at the Nature Center on October 28 (see below).

Blessing of the Animals
Churches throughout the city -- of all denominations
-- are holding blessing ceremonies on
Sunday. Locally, you can participate at St.
Edmund Church.
All
well-behaved critters are invited, including stuffed
animals (if your child does not have a pet), or you
can bring a photo. Blessings take place rain or
shine beginning at 1:30 pm in the Grotto next to the
church (between East 19th St. and Ocean Ave.; enter
via driveway on Ave. T).

The biggest of all blessing ceremonies (including lions
and tigers and bears, oh my!, takes place, of
course, takes place at St. John the Divine
-- the second largest basilica in the world -- on
the Upper West Side. The blessings are part of an
all-day event that begins at 11 am.

Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC)
21st Annual Dog Show and Parade, 12-5 pm
Parade begins at noon
at the BARC shelter/BQE Pet Supply Store (see below)
and goes to McCarren Park. Everyone is encouraged to
be in costume.
The dog show runs from 1-5 in the park. The theme is
Super Pup & His Friends. Prizes include Best
Superhero costume ($500 for first place; $200,
second). Also prizes for Best Kisser, Best Trick,
etc. Food, music, and other entertainment.
Pre-registration for parade is not required.

Nessie Comes to
Brooklyn
The Loch Ness Monster
will be visiting Gerritsen Creek (courtesy of artist
Cameron Gainer) close to the Nature Center. It's
part of the Art in the Parks program, which is
celebrating 40 years of exhibitions throughout city
parks.
The artist will speak about his work at the Nature
Center in November (date to be posted when
available).

Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festival,

Animals from New York
City's shelters will be available for adoption. A
steel drum band will provide music, and there will
be low-cost microchipping ($25) for dogs and cats.
Pet care professionals, including a vet, trainer,
and groomer will be on hand to answer questions.

Hoyt Lost and Found Pet Bulletin Board Dedication, 1

Celebrate the launch of the new outdoor bulletin
board built by Nature Center volunteers to provide a
central location for posted information regarding
lost and found animals.
The Pet Adoption Mobile from Animal Care and Control
will be at the Center and low-cost ($25) animal
microchipping will be available. Information on pet
care and licensing will be on hand as well.
Gilbert the Magician and his Wonder Dog, Red will
perform and there will be clowns, pumpkin carving,
and a dress-as-an- Urban-Park-Ranger costume
contest.
The bulletin board was made possible by a donation
in honor of Jack and Ellen Hoyt. The event is
sponsored by the Urban Park Rangers.

Narrows Botanical Gardens 12th Annual Harvest
Festival & Canine Costume Contest
Dogs must be

eligible to participate in the costume contest. Fee:

presented to Paws 'N' Claws Grooming, 57 Bay Ridge

entertainers.
If you plan to attend with your pooch, FIDO
(Prospect Park's dog owners' group) reminds
paradegoers that dogs should be well-behaved around
children, crowds, and noise.
