The squirrel appears to be approaching the bench on tip toe seemingly not wanting to disturb Cocoa (chocolate Lab) or -- more likely --not wanting to attract his attention. We didn't notice the squirrel in the viewfinder when the photo was taken.

A Saint of a Dog: This gentle giant -- named Richard for Richard the Lionhearted -- is a long-haired Saint Bernard.  He is  8 years old and his weight ranges from 140 to 150 pounds, making him just about the largest dog on this site.

Not a Rabbit Trick -- (above and below)   Dogs and their owners alike are surprised and delighted when they come upon Nibbles, a Himalayan-Dutch lop, out for a walk (on a  leash, of course) with his owners, Steven and Christine.

Squirrel Hotel -- (above and below)  You can almost always see squirrels in or around this tree (on the west side of the park, a bit north of the Avenue U parking lot). The squirrel retreated to his perch (see arrow below) with the peanut we pitched to him.

Angels of Marine Park -- Gerritsen Beach resident Julie Fuchs, with the help of her husband, Frank, has planted and maintains a number of small gardens on the periphery of the Oval. On this day, Julie, with the help of her adorable miniature poodles, gathered up debris. The Fuchs do all the work as volunteers and at their own expense. The park staff provides the bags and carts the material away. Anyone wanting to donate flats of impatiens or other plantings can drop them off at the field house (near the main entrance on Fillmore Avenue).

Duchess Needs a Home -- This friendly, well-behaved 5-months-old chow mix was one of the cats and dogs up for adoption at the Salt Marsh Nature Center on April 5. The event was sponsored by New York City Animal Care & Control and the Department of Parks & Recreation. If you would like to adopt Duchess (or another dog or cat), contact NYAC&C by dialing 311 or see their website.
